Cartoon shows labor leader Sidney Hillman, with CIO president Philip Murray, asking grinning city bosses Edward Kelly, Edward J. Flynn, and Frank Hague, "What did I do wrong?" A paper on the table reads, "Truman 1031, Wallace 105." Despite the fact that he was strongly supported by the labor unions and the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, Vice President Henry Wallace was denied renomination at the Democratic Presidential Convention in 1944, losing to Senator Harry Truman, who was more acceptable to the South and the city bosses. Democratic leaders, fearing that Roosevelt's health was uncertain, were determined to prevent Wallace, viewed as an unpredictable wild-eyed visionary, from being next in line for the presidency.
