Four-panel comic strip shows Congresswoman Lacey Davenport and her husband, Dick, in the back seat of a taxi. Dick maintains that newly elected Senator John Warner got the Republican nomination after the nominee was killed in an accident because Warner offered to pay the nominee's campaign debts and set up a trust fund for the family. In August 1978, the Republican candidate for the Senate in Virginia, Richard Obenshain, was killed in a plane crash. The Republicans quickly picked Warner, who had been a close second in the nomination process, to take his place. Newspaper accounts reported that Warner received the nomination because of his strong contest for the nomination, the popularity of his wife, Elizabeth Taylor, and his ability as a wealthy man to raise campaign money quickly. Warner did spend his own money heavily in the ensuing campaign and did buy the assets of the Obenshain campaign committee, helping it pay off its debts. This strip was one of a series poking fun at Warner and Elizabeth Taylor. The Republican caucus of the Virginia General Assumbly voted to censure Trudeau for his "bad taste."
