Fighting highway deaths, Wash. D.C. This photograph shows Richard S. Dill, a worker in the U.S. Bureau of Standards, tabulating the efficiency of various kinds of brake linings as the government attempts to determine the best for use on its vehicles. The automobile industry is watching these tests carefully as a possible indication of the kind of brake lining to use to reduce the number of deaths on highways, which numbered 33,980 in 1934, 10/4/35 [graphic].
