Science and research. Studies of non-coking coals. William S. Landers, assistant chemical engineer at the Golden, Colorado field station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, uses precision gas analysis apparatus which measures the properties of gas made in a coke oven. This is important, since gas is a usable by-product of coke. These studies are designed to make western coal more adaptable for coke uses [graphic].
