Photograph shows Walter W. Johnson (1836-1879), civil engineer, explorer, surveyor, and teacher of freedmen in Washington, D.C. Johnson died from a fall in a Virginia mine in 1879. He was adopted by noted scientist Walter R. Johnson and Nancy Johnson, an inventor, missionary and teacher. The family is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
