1 volume (82 pages) ; 25 x 19 cm (4to) Peter Artedi, known as the "father of ichthyology," was a colleague of (and possible influence on) Linnaeus. Notes made by Artedi on the fish-specimen collection of Albertus Seba, posthumously incorporated into volume 3 of the latter's Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri. Describes the fishes found in Ambon and Suriname, arranged by genus and species. Title from title page. Copied by Rob. Wilh. van Homrigh and given away 1773. Cf. note on verso of front free endpaper. Formerly owned by Sir Thomas Phillilpps (Phillipps MS 8328); received by the Bureau of Fisheries Library on September 13, 1899 (per ink stamp on t.p.). Date of acquisition by LC unknown. Date of production conjectured from year in which Artedi worked with Albertus Seba (1735) and year of donation by van Homrigh (1773). Bound in full tree calf with gilt-tooled ornamental borders and centerpieces; gilt-tooled ornaments on spine; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt.
