Autograph manuscript describing North America, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Conrrado describes himself as an official of the Inquisition, an honorary officer of the tribunal in Robaina, and translator of reliable works in a variety of languages on the discovery and exploration of the Americas. Conrrado drew upon works in Latin, Dutch, Portuguese, Castilian, French and English, as well as letters and pilots' journals, some in manuscript and some published. His work provides a history of Florida and a comprehensive general description of the New World, including detailed information on geography, natural history, agriculture, native customs and historical accounts of voyages and travels. The author's chief source was Joannes de Laet's Nouvus Orbis seu descriptionis Indiae occidentalis first published at Leiden in 1625. Conrrado cites the Dutch edition of 1630 and the augmented Latin edition of 1633/1634. Conrrado's book is illustrated with double-page engraved maps by Laet. Conrrado's manuscript appears never to have been published. "Registro de las mappas," list of maps with locations throughout the text, preliminary page [9]. Title page hand lettered; text in a neat longhand with minimal margins. In iron gall ink on paper. In the main text, leaves are numbered in ink and each folded map is included in the foliation as one leaf. Maps are numbered throughout the book in pencil, 1-14. Bound in 17th-century boards with remnants of marbled paper covers; tan calf spine with raised bands and black leather label tooled in gilt: LAS IND. OCCID. POR BALT. CONRADO. Title page has a repair in the upper right corner with minimal loss of text, the end of the word traduci[do?]. Detailed table of contents, "Tabla de los Capitulas que Contienen los libros de esta descripcion," 12 unnumbered pages at end, includes many subheadings with page numbers. The Prologue includes an extensive bibliography. Bibliographical citations are written in margins of some pages of the general text.
