text rus In the 19th century, the Russian Orthodox Church focused its missionary efforts in Siberia, primarily in the area east of Lake Baikal. Orthodox missionaries expanded their efforts as part of a broader strategy of Russification of the region. Much of the work of the Orthodox missionaries focused on converting the Buriat people, who were traditionally Buddhist. This text by an unnamed author describes the efforts of missionaries in the Tunkinsky area of the Irkutsk gubernia (Irkutsk oblast) in 1856-57. Today the Tunkinsky District is a part of the Republic of Buryatiya within the Russian Federation. The booklet is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
