Kenneth Cohen is a 31-year-old African American and an A-Journeyman, who grew in a Union family--his father is a retired Local 3 Electrician. He describes how he started college because of peer and societal pressures about successful careers, and how he left to find more satisfaction in becoming a Local 3 electrician. He talks about how, when his father started, it was primarily a father-to-son industry, and now, how most apprenticeships are first generation in the trade. Nevertheless, he feels that today's diverse apprenticeship program retains a familial closeness due to mentorships, club programs, and other Union activities. He describes his own on-the-job experiences, including how "professional adrenaline" allowed him to overcome a fear of heights, and the unique "learning dynamic" that electrical work provides. He describes the trust and partnerships that must develop---despite personalities--in order to work safely: for example, when lifting heavy pipe with a partner. He equates his long-term interest in advocacy and activism to both his Union activity and the job itself: "The better electrician I am, the more opportunities there are for others like me."
