Jeff Miller drives a truck for a compost company collecting totes of food waste from restaurants and grocery stores, which he then brings to a compost facility. His day starts when he gets up at 2:00 a.m., and he often works 11-hour days, averaging two to three hundred miles a day in the truck. Miller describes what driving the route is like, as well as tipping the 48-gallon totes that often contain "maggot juice" along with the food scraps. He talks about the satisfaction he gets from knowing he is keeping these resources out of the landfill and making soil for people's gardens.
Collection is open for research. To request materials, please contact the Folklife Reading Room at
Duplication of collection materials may be governed by copyright and other restrictions.
Ihis interview is short because Mr. Miller had just worked an 11-hour day and still had a two hour drive home. These materials are also deposited at the Vermont Folklife Center. An abbreviated version of this interview may also appear in the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund Farm-to-Plate "Career Profiles and Pathways" project.
Recorded at the offices of Grow Compost, Waterbury, Vermont, September 19, 2018.
