Richard Dusenbury describes his experiences working as a Personal Care Assistant, starting with care of his grandmother when he was in his early 20s. He discusses his experiences working with clients in the judicial system who had mental health and behavioral conditions; running his own adult foster care; and working with agencies after returning to Michigan to live closer to his mother. He also describes his limitations related to his own physical disabilities, and his unique perspective as a male PCA. Richard details some of the joys and dangers of PCA work. Richard is a good example of how multi-dimensional PCAs are: he speaks fluent French; loves projects and fixing things; knows a great deal about photography equipment; and has done a lot of volunteer work in Ghana through his church.
