David Jenks talks about teaching in three elementary schools in his native city, Madison, Wisconsin. He emphasizes mandated changes that make it more difficult for him to teach. Earlier in his career, he worked with other teachers in the local Heron Network helping his students publish inquiry articles in Great Blue Heron. Now he has less time for students to research their original questions. He describes a yearly classroom project in which students write letters to seek funding for a 3-5 day trip near the end of the year, and how this project motivates positive social and learning behaviors. Other topics include daily routines, efforts to make school fun, commitment to "tough kids," building classroom community, the need to be strict, and interactions among school professionals.
