The booklet presented here is a posthumous tribute to Raimundo Santamaría (1795-1869), published in the year of his death. Santamaría was born in Medellín, Colombia, and became an important figure in the region of Antioquia. He participated in the Colombian wars of independence in the early 19th century. He later married and became an adviser to the government, but he mainly concentrated his energies on business. He introduced English ploughing techniques to Colombia and was the principal promoter of steam navigation on the Magdalena River, particularly to support the export of fruit and tobacco. The frontispiece of the booklet shows a photograph of Raimundo Santamaria.
