  <note type="ownership">One of the most legendary violins constructed by the Stradivari workshop, it is named after one of its early owners, Arthur Betts, who owned the violin from 1825 until 1852. After passing through numeruous hands, it eventually was owned by John Taylor Roberts of Hartford, Connecticut from 1925-1934 before being sold to Mrs. Gertrude Clarke Whittall in 1934, who in turn donated it to the Library of Congress in 1936.</note>
