The settlement was named by Church of Latter-Day Saints (or Mormon) leader Brigham Young after a city mentioned in the church's Book of Mormon containing the writings of Mormon prophets. Completed in 1911, the building was one of almost 1700 "Carnegie Libraries" across the nation, funded in whole or part by New York industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
