Decision for chemistry is a broad story of the contributions of the chemical industry to mankind structured around the theme of "boys and freight trains", which involves the curiosity of youth and the freedom of expression and exploration as provided by the chemical industry. The film surveys the role of chemistry in American life and traces its evolution in the United States from a frontier science in the 1920s to a post-World War II era of discovery and innovation intended to make people's lives safer and more comfortable. Advances in plastics, byproducts, agriculture, and home gardening are explored. The film concludes with words of encouragement for youth interested in future careers in the chemical industry.
