This volume brings together issues 1 to 87 of the newspaper Sharaf (1882–1899) and issues 1 to 66 of the newspaper Sharafat (1896–1904). The primary purpose of both periodicals was to record the biographies of contemporary figures and to publish news concerning them. As such, they serve as a valuable source for the study of Iranian and foreign political elites of the time. According to their editor, these newspapers were “devoted to the writing of the biographies of the noble figures of the world,” with each issue containing the life story of one individual accompanied by his or her portrait. Beyond their biographical content, both Sharaf and Sharafat are noteworthy for their artistic merit in the fields of calligraphy and painting, having provided a forum for the display of works by some of the finest artists and calligraphers of the era.
