Butin was a physician, and the first woman to become a member of both the Nebraska State and Fresno County (California) Medical societies. She financed the first suffrage campaign for women in California's San Joaquin Valley. Her autobiography provides a fascinating picture of rural/frontier medicine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
