1900 was the year of Houdini's emergence, in Europe, as a star and his performance schedule in Germany is presented here. In 1899, booked by Martin Beck for the Orpheum Circuit, the magician put his dime museum and medicine show days behind him. In 1900, focusing upon "escapology," Houdini became the rage of England; then his fame spread to Germany and Russia. Galvanizing the English imagination, Houdini escaped from the Handcuffs of Scotland Yard. In Dresden, he jumped shackled into the Elbe River and resurfaced triumphant. By 1902, Houdini had sued a German police officer named Werner Graff for impugning his ability to escape from police manacles. The case was first heard in Cologne's Schoffengerich. Houdini escaped from regulation restraints as part of the court proceedings and won the case. It was appealed to the Strafkammer, where more policemen supported Graff's allegations. Once again Houdini triumphed over a lock and he won the appeal. Graff then took the case to the final level, the Oberlandesgericht. In October of 1902, Houdini won a verdict of libel. By the time Houdini arrived in Russia and escaped from a Siberian prison transport van, the legend had begun.
