"The Mexican naval officer and explorer José María Narváez visited California in 1822 and produced this pen-and-ink and watercolor map of the region from the Rio Grande westward to California. It shows the Pacific coastline, the lands inhabited by different Indian tribes, and the route of the 1775 expedition of Juan Bautista de Anza from Monterrey, Mexico, to California and back. Red lines demarcate the boundaries between Alta (Upper) and Baja (Lower) California and between the four districts of Alta California (San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco). Symbols are used to indicate presidios, haciendas, ranches, mines, sources of water, cities and towns (including Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe, New Mexico), and pueblos. In the lower-left corner is a table listing all of the missions and the number of their novices in the districts of Alta California and in Baja California. The map is particularly valuable for showing the territories inhabited by the different Indian tribes of the region, including the Yutas (Utes), Apaches, and others." World Digital Library.
