- The people called in early documents Guaymí and now Ngäbe appear to have left Costa Rica some centuries ago. Many of the young people have recently begun to return but are seen as immigrants by the Costa Rican government. This study looks at how this migration from Panama evolved as a response to the marginalization and neglect of indigenous people by the Panamanian officialdom, as well as local violence against them by non-indigenous immigrant settlers invading their homelands. It is unhelpful that 44 percent of Panama's land is not clearly titled, and there are currently more than 100,000 unsettled land disputes, many of them in and around indigenous areas. The study elaborates the indigenous struggle in Panama on one hand and in Costa Rica on the other, in a region with little commitment to indigenous rights.
