- The book presents an insightful and critical assessment of different strains of urban and Western notions of feminism as the author confronts and examines the indigenous feminist movement within the social movement of Zapatismo (the 1992 EZLN uprising) based in such things as the "Law of Women" and other declarations. She then contrasts these with the ethnographically captured voices of many women involved with Zapatismo and, specifically, one Tojolabal settlement (Chiptik). She concludes with a critique of both Zapatsimo and of urban feminisms, and views the changes in gender relations inside the rebellion as a long process not at all finished and which continues to be a hard path to navigate for many indigenous women.
