- This study examines the Tohono O'odham/Papago and Pima in the ethnographic record and compares the oral tradition of the first third of the 20th century with subsequent texts, looking at how the movement from oral to written text has impacted the dynamics and messages of the myths and tales captured. The author looks in-depth at the myths themselves, identifying a deep strata associated with desert-based hunting and gathering, overlaid with later layers of agriculture and Christianization. Of special interest are the linkages made between old and recent baskets, ceramics, metal work, and earthworks, and their connection to northern Sonoran petroglyphs - all depicting a sacred labyrinth. The indigenous meanings associated with this labyrinthine symbolism are amply examined here.
