- An exploration of the concept of autonomy within the context of a study of a Nicaraguan Atlantic Coast Miskito indigenous settlement, from which the book title is taken. Historically based, this work explores autonomy in light of the 1987 laws recognizing ethnic diversity in its national population and offering up the possibility of autonomous governance according to local custom - especially in the Autonomous Region of the Atlantic South and Atlantic North - and how this plays out in the region. The study is grounded in a materialist ethnography, contrasting autonomous practices with autonomy in legal terms, and its conclusions are unexpectedly ambivalent.
