- A sympathetic but scholarly look at a long history, including how it was experienced on the ground, of settlement and dispossession of Q'eqchi' Maya peoples in tropical areas of northern Guatemala. Focuses on a local example of a global trend of displacing millions of indigenous people to establish parks and other environmentally protected areas. Explores the colonialism-like alliances between international conservation groups and corporations (shutting out native inhabitants), traces back a long history to explain what drives indigenous people to protected lands, and outlines what could be done to accommodate both indigenous rights and needs, as well as conservation concerns. Ethnography of the highest quality from a scholar with deep, ethnographically informed empathy.
