- This monograph compiles information on nearly every aspect of Grenada's history over the first three centuries of its colonization. The study begins with a consideration of the native Carib population, including reflections on European misperceptions of the people. Martin then charts the warfare and destruction brought by Spanish colonization, early British attempts to capture the island, French success at establishing a permanent outpost in 1649, and finally English conquest in 1763. The Island Caribs remain a primary focus of the book throughout each of these periods, as their role in the colony shifted with every transformation. Martin also charts several of the key episodes of genocide in the island, including the 1650-1651 massacre at Sauteurs. [DL]
