- Pestana analyzes in rigorous detail the "Western Design" implemented by England's Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) to augment England's colonial presence in the early Caribbean. She assesses English conceptions of the West Indies, alongside growing theories about empire and conquest at the time of the plan. England's military failed to take the island of Hispaniola, but effectively established itself in Jamaica. Pestana demonstrates, however, the difficulty that the English had in fully colonizing the island due to challenges in subduing enslaved populations, eliminating an ongoing Spanish presence, and building a successful economy.
