Subjects also include Jessup's academic career as a student at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and Columbia and Yale universities; his service in the American Expeditionary Force, U.S. Army, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Belgium, and France during World War I; postwar loyalty and security investigations including charges made against him by Senator Joseph McCarthy; the Democratic Party and national politics; American policy in Vietnam; and civil rights. Includes files pertaining to Jessup's biography of Elihu Root; and essays and poetry penned by Jessup while serving in Europe during and after World War I.</description>

Transcripts of correspondence are interspersed with memoranda, postcards, photographs, telegrams, clippings, itineraries, invitations, event programs, reports, and other documents. Letters in an autograph file are addressed to the Jessups and to Lois's father, Frederick Sheffield Kellogg, and are signed by former presidents, diplomats, authors, civil rights activists, and other prominent historical figures. Correspondence, notebooks, travel documents, photographs, and other papers of Lois Kellogg Jessup relating to her early teaching career; work with the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker-founded organization; the U.S. Children's Bureau assisting children in Europe during World War II; and United Nations. Also includes material concerning her writings and travels to observe conditions and examine the activities of women in developing countries.</description>
