WWW, July 26, 2000 (Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence; signed at Charlotte, N.C., May 20, 1775; handwritten original of the Meck Dec is said to have burned in a fire at the home of John McNitt Alexander, secretary of the drafting committee. The document was reconstructed from his notes but was not published until decades later. For that reason, some historians question its authenticity, as did Thomas Jefferson, whose national Declaration of Independence was adopted more than a year after the Meck Dec)
