Hippias then ruled jointly with his brother, Hipparchus until 514 when Hipparchus was murdered by Aristogeiton. In reaction to his brother's death, Hippias began to rule in a harshly repressive way until he was besieged in 512 B.C. by the Spartan king Cleomenes and was forced into exile to Persia.
