Became Edmonson County Attorney in 1900; was elected county judge ten years later. Became attorney general of Kentucky in 1915 until his resignation in 1917. Practiced law in Louisville and later in Bowling Green, Ky. then was elected to the Kentucky state court of appeals from 1926 to March 1931. Ran for U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 1930 and 1936, serving from March 4, 1931 until his death on October 3, 1939 in Washington, D. C.)
