Hertzówna, Amelia. Decadent histories, 2015: title page (four plays by Amelia Hertz) page xiii-xiv (Amelia Hertz was born in Warsaw on 15 October 1878. At twenty she began her studies of chemistry, physics, and mathematics abroad, first in Bern and then in Berlin, where in 1904 she wrote her doctoral dissertation in chemistry. Between 1905 and 1911 Hertz wrote and published three of the four plays in this volume. In 1908 she began a serious study of history, archaeology, and ancient Middle Eastern languages in Heidelberg, Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, and Paris. Although a frequent visitor to her homeland, she did not return to Poland permanantly until 1917. Hertz turned to writing fiction and books for young people, including a children's play and a popular book about Egyptian civilization. Although it was her scholarly work in ancient history, published abroad in scientific journals, that attracted favorable attention, Hertz persisted in seeking recognition as a playwright. Amelia Hertz was arrested by the Gestapo in 1941, and taken to Pawiak prison [Warsaw, Poland] where she died in 1942) cover (Polish-Jewish playwright Amelia Hertz wrote in the early twentieth century innovative plays based on bizarre and macabre episodes from history and legend)
