Biographical directory of the U.S. Congress website, June 13, 2014 (Chilton, Horace, (grandson of Thomas Chilton), a Senator from Texas; born near Tyler, Smith County, Tex., December 29, 1853; received private instruction; attended the local schools in Texas and Lynnland Institute, Glendale, Ky.; learned the printing business and published a tri-weekly newspaper in Tyler; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced practice in Tyler, Tex.; appointed assistant attorney general of Texas 1881-1883; appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John H. Reagan and served from June 10, 1891, to March 22, 1892, when a successor was elected; unsuccessful candidate for election to this vacancy; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1894 and served from March 4, 1895, to March 3, 1901; withdrew as a candidate for reelection; resumed the practice of law in Tyler and Beaumont, Tex.; moved to Dallas, Tex., in 1906 and continued the practice of law; died in Dallas, Tex., June 12, 1932; interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Tex.)
