German Wikipedia, December 19, 2019 (article title: Carl Weyprecht; Carl (Karl) Georg Ludwig Wilhelm Weyprecht (born 8 September 1838 in Darmstadt, died 29 March 1881 in Michelstadt); marine officer, polar explorer and geophysicist in Austro-Hungarian service; his preferred residence was Trieste; joined Austro-Hungarian Navy in 1856; distinguished himself in the naval battle of Lissa (1866) as navigation officer; in 1871, with Julius Payer, undertook a preliminary expedition to the Barents Sea; in spring 1872, appointed leader (naval operations), with Payer (land operations), of the Austro-Hungarian Polar Expedition of 1872-1874 on the ship Admiral Tegethoff; worked to organize the first International Polar Year, which took place in 1882-1883, after his death in 1881 from tuberculosis)
