Dictionary of African Biography, accessed January 30, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Gizenga, Antoine; political figure; born 05 October 1925 in Mbanza, Democratic Republic of the Congo; studied Thomist philosophy at the Mayidi seminary in the western Bas-Congo region; ordained a Catholic priest in 1947 and ran a parish in his home Kwilu region; joined the openly leftist Parti Solidaire Africain (PSA), founded by the radical Pierre Mulele (1958); refused to accept Kasa-Vubu's government in Kinshasa and formed a counter-government in Kisangani, the largest city in eastern Congo (1961); in the moderate Kinshasa-based regime of Cyrille Adoula; forced to step down from position as vice prime minister by the Congolese parliament (1962); sentenced to prison (1962-1964); fled to the neighboring Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) after Mobutu definitively took power in a coup (1965); earned respect as one of few Congolese politicians to stay clear of Mobutu and continued affiliation with Parti Lumumbiste Unifié (PALU) (1990's); died in Democratic Republic of the Congo)
