Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 881 (John Taliagerro Thompson, born December 31, 1860, in Newport, Ky. Attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1882. Served in the Spanish American War. In 1913 he became the army's youngest colonel. Resigned a year later to become chief engineer of the Remington Arms Corporation. Returned to the Army when the United States entered World War I in 1917. Reitred from the army in 1919 as a brigadier general. The following year his private company developed the submachine gun. Died June 21, 1940 and was buried at West Point.)
