Feb. 6, 1885; studied theology, esp. history, earned Ph.D. from Univ. Jena in 1856; private tutor to crown prince Bernhard von Sachsen-Meiningen, 1860-69, writing about their travels to Naples & Rome (1868/69) and Asia (1872/73); switched focus to art history and theater; appointed prof. of art history at Kunstschule zu Weimar in 1872, then the Akademie zu Düsseldorf in 1873, leaving that same year to work at the Königlichen Sammlungen für Kunst und Wissenschaft zu Dresden; drew up plans for artistic decoration of the Hoftheater and the Albrechtsburg zu Meissen, taking over general mgmt of the later; published engravings of modern paintings held by the Dresdener Galerie)
