German Wikipedia, viewed February 21, 2019 (Karl Heinrich Schäfer; born July 27, 1871, in Wetter; died January 29, 1945, in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp; German historian and archivist; obtained his Dr. phil. degree at Tübingen in 1902; he converted to Catholicism in 1902; from 1903 on, he was associated with the Römisches Institut of the Görres-Gesellschaft; in 1921, he joined the staff of the Reichsarchiv in Potsdam; he was forced into retirement in 1934 following a denunciation; imprisoned in 1943, he was sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp in January, 1945, where he died on January 29; he has been honored as a martyr by the Catholic Church in Germany)
