Type of family | Paulsen, né Ludwig, he adopted the name Louis, in 1854. He was the younger brother of Wilfried Paulsen (31 July 1828 -6 February 1901) also a German chess master. Chess activity at the Paulsen's was restricted to the father instructing his children on one evening of the week only, and then on Sunday he played one game with each of his four offspring, without giving any further or special theoretical instruction.
