Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 32 (born in Wayne County, Kentucky; graduated from Burnside High School in Pulaski County, attended Berea College 1924-1926 then taught school in rural Pulaski County. Earned a B.A. in science from the University of Louisville in 1930. Was a teacher then principal at a high school in Pulaski County, then moved to Cincinnati where she wrote short stories and her first novel. Married Harold B. Arnow and moved to a farm in Pulaski County, then in 1944 to Detroit where she wrote additional novels. In 1950 moved to a farm near Ann Arbor, Michigan where she continued to write novels. Received honorary degrees from Albion College, Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky. Taught at the Hindment Settlement School's annual two week writing workshop during the summers of 1978 to 1986. Died March 21, 1986 at her Washtenaw County, Michigan farm.)
