| Biography/History note | On the 300th anniversary of William Shakespeare's traditional birth date, April 23, 1864, the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft was formed in Weimar as Germany's first literary society. Following the disruptions of World War II and German national division, the society was revived in Weimar, with a branch created in West Germany at Bochum. In 1963, this Western branch was established as an independent society. Each society published its own yearbook and held its own conferences. Following German national reunification in 1990, negotiations to reunite the two German Shakespeare societies began in earnest, and bore fruit with the official reunification of the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft, headquartered in Weimar, in 1993.
