Ellis has been Professor of Child Life and Health in the University of Edinburgh since 1946, and was previously Physician for Children's Diseases, Guy's Hospital, London. His medical education at King's College, Cambridge, and St Thomas's Hospital was followed by postgraduate work in the Children's Medical Centre, Boston, Mass. During the Second World War he served in the R.A.F. medical service in North Africa, Italy, and Belgium.)
