Biography/History note | Born in Algiers, Algeria, was abandoned, cared for by social services, christened Albertine Damien, then adopted by a family that moved her to Aix-en-Provence. After an abusive family life and reform school in Marseille, she escaped to Paris and immersed herself in lliterature and art. In 1953 a hold-up sent her to Fresnes Prison, where she wrote her first novels, L'Astragale and La Cavale, published after her release in 1964. She escaped, met and married Julien Sarrazin. Her success allowed them to settle in Montpellier where she wrote her third story, La TraversieĢre, and died soon afterwards from kidney surgery complications. |
