| Biography/History note | The Accademia dei Lincei, founded 1603- practically extinct from 1651 to the end of the 18th century-was revived in 1801 by the Accademia fisico-matematica which changed its name to Accademia de Nuovi Lincei, later(1804) to Accademia dei Lincei,and ceased to exist in 1840. In 1847 the academy was again revived by Pius IX as Accademia pontificia dei Nuovi Lincei. By a reorganization in 1870 two academies were formed, the papal academy continuing under its original name, the other academy taking the name Reale Accademia dei Lincei. From 1902-22 it was called Pontificia accademia romana dei Nuovi Lincei, and 1923-35 the Pontificia accademia delle scienze nuovi Lincei. It was reconstituted under present title in 1936. |
