Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, viewed online May 10, 2017 (Sharp, Cecil James (1859-1924); collector of English folk-songs and dances; attended a private school in Brighton from 1867, then in 1869 went to Uppingham School, where his musical abilities, fostered by his family, flourished; Sharp's family now sent him to Australia, whither he sailed in October 1882; In January 1889 Sharp embarked on a career as a professional musician, joining Immanuel Reimann as co-director of the Adelaide College of Music. He took various posts in music; He now flung himself into collecting, amassing more than 1500 tunes in the next four years, and into promoting the cause of folk-music. In 1911 he won musical control of the prestigious Stratford upon Avon festival; On 6 December 1911 the English Folk Dance Society was founded, giving Sharp the organizational base he had lacked. Sharp died at his home, 4 Maresfield Gardens, in the early hours of 23 June 1924.)
