He was nicknamed "Farmer Franz." He received his doctorate at Göttingen in 1925. He saw Hitler's rise to power as the fulfillment of the goals of the Bauernkrieg. He taught at Heidelberg from 1935 to 1945, when he was dismissed from his professorship following Germany's defeat in World War II. He received a position at the Landwirtschaftliche Hochschule in Stuttgart-Hohenheim in 1957)
