Wikipedia, June 19, 2013 (John Franklin; Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin KCH FRGS RN; born 16 April 1786 in Spilssby, Lincolnshire, Eng.; died 11 June 1847 at sea near King William Island, Canada aboard HMS Terror. British Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer, Franklin also served as governor of Tasmania for several years. He disappeared on his last expedition, attempting to chart and navigate a section of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The icebound ships were abandoned and the entire crew perished from starvation, hypothermia, tuberculosis, lead poisoning and scurvy. After his first wife died he married Jane Griffin)
