Scanlon, Jennifer. American women historians, 1700s-1990s, 1996: pages 68-69 (Fannie Hardy Eckstorm, born 1865 in Maine; leading authority on the Penobscot Indians and ornithologist. Attended Smith College in 1885, graduating in 1888. "Often the first white women to enter" an area on canoe trips with her fur trapper father, "and probably one of the few to speak the local Indian dialects." An expert taxidtermist and served as one of the first women superintendents of schools in Maine in 1889-1891. Married and lived with her husband in Maine and Providence, RI. Prolific author, wirting on birds, Penobscot residents, folk songs and the handicrafts of Indians. Founded the public library in Brewer. Died December 31, 1946.)
