He graduated from Dartmouth College (1826) and was involved in the antislavery movement (1830s and 1840s). He affiliated with the Liberty Party; and became chair of the convention that resulted in formation of Free-Soil Party (1848). He won election to the U.S. Senate (1849 and 1860) and was selected by Abraham Lincoln to be his treasury secretary (1861). He was appointed chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, where he led the Supreme Court until his death. He died 07 May 1873 in New York, New York, United States)
