(Fitzjames O'Brien) [info from InU] Wikipedia, Jan. 2, 2013 (Fitz James O'Brien (also spelled Fitz-James; December 31, 1828-April 6, 1862) was an Irish-born American writer, some of whose work is often considered a forerunner of today's science fiction. He was born Michael O'Brien in County Cork. He attended the University of Dublin and is believed to have been a soldier in the British army at one time. About 1852 he emigrated to the United States, in the process changing his name to Fitz James, and thenceforth he devoted his attention to literature. He was also employed in writing plays. He was severely wounded in a Civil War skirmish on February 26, 1862, and lingered until April, when he died at Cumberland, Maryland. |
